Just Another Day Around Here

Just finishing up another week around here. Tomorrow is "Family Friday" so school will take a back seat. I mean, there's always something to learn but nothing "official." It will be one of our last family dates for a while as John prepares to head off to more schools for his CO tour.

To Continue or Not

So, here we are, just 4 months in to homeschooling.

It's all actually going well. I mean, it's just preschool and most of that is just facts of life type stuff. Turner is doing really well with his ABCs and 123s. His appetite for knowledge is incredibly fun to watch and he's often the one keeping me in check! We're done with all of the checkmarks children "should" know for going in to Kinder and now we're working on the shoe tying, *ahem* rear wiping, handwashing and general chores.

I think April is the time for registering for Kindergarten so John and I have been talking a lot about what we'll do for the next stage in Turner's schooling. At first, I wasn't sure John was on board with continuing to homeschool so I brought it up and it seems that he's completely supportive either way! I am lucky to have such an incredible supportive husband but now it's time to decide what to do.

It seems there's a lot to think about: send Turner off to school or continue to homeschool for the next school year. He was, initially, excited to go to Kindergarten but it seems he's more interested in staying home now.

We shall see what road we take!

In the mean time, we're still plugging along with "work." I made my very first lapbook. Until now, I've been printing out Tot Packs from two fantastic resources (Homeschool Creations and 1+1+1=1).

A Little Here, A Lot There

I think I've finally come to understand "go with the flow" for school. Some weeks we get lots accomplished and some weeks, we really go for the "play based" ideas.

At any rate, I have wanted to post more of my weekly plans so I remember the links and ideas when it's Eli's turn. These days, it looks like we might go on with homeschooling for Kindergarten. Turner is getting cold feet and, while I'm on board for continuing, I'm not sure John is.

This week we've managed to accomplish a lot. Turner is able to sit for longer periods and does his workboxes with minimal help. I really think the hardest part of all of this is staying at a preschool level (with some Kinder skills) so he's not sitting board if he does choose to go to a public school!

Tripping Over Hurdles

Whew! Where does the time go? The minutes crrreeeeep by but the days fly.

We've been doings here and there. Mostly, just trying to get through the rest of this underway. I COMPLETELY underestimated how much work is involved in being creative and playful while balancing house work and just hang out time with the kids.

Last week we got nothing accomplished for school. While we did little things like reading our books, I didn't do any "proper" school work. Not for any other reason than I just couldn't get to it. Up all night for nights on end with the baby, Eli visiting at 4am every day, Turner following closely behind to ask why Eli wasn't in bed has left me exhausted.

Turner noticed that he hadn't done any school work and asked me about it this weekend! Talk about holding me accountable!

Sheesh!

Got My School Work Ready?

 This week I decided to try out a lapbook from Homeschool Creations. Some days the baby wants to nurse when I don't expect it, Eli needs waaaay more attention that the day before and Turner is dying to do something other than play cars. He's always asking for school work or something interesting and now we have it. 

This week's focus letter is P so I searched around until I found a police theme. 

He absolutely LOVES catching the bad guys.

Saying "pa pa pa Police" is helping Turner say the word correctly
(it sounds like "fa leece" when he says it).

He really loves having "work" that he can choose to do any time he'd like.

This Week's Plan

Numbers: working on 10-20

For the letter P, we will be using a bunch of ideas from all over the internet. I could make things easy on myself and use Confessions of a Homeschooler's wonderful resource but the theme is pumpkins. Let's just say I'm over the season and not in the mood for them!

There are bunch of cute fingerplays and ideas here and this page has a lot of ideas that seem simple enough. The important thing is that I'm loaded with ideas!

Monday: introduction to P and the Policeman Preschool Pack (or first venture in to a lapbook, I think Turner will LOVE it and the opportunity for something self-guided),  park day

Tuesday: Aquarium before or after naps, introduction to numbers 10-20 (Turner knows them by recital but not identification), finishing up Valentine crafts

Wednesday: Library story time, pasta art

Thursday: mail Valentine's crafts, baking day (pineapple muffins!)

Friday: finish anything we didn't get to

Circle Time: working on days of the week (today, yesterday, tomorrow), policeman fingerplays and songs

Here Fishy Fishy

While sitting down to learn your ABCs is just dandy, around here it's got to be interesting. With the boys' ages, it's hard to keep Turner engaged and not feeling like he's being grilled AND keep Eli happy and sort of involved. 

So...

Let the games begin! 

This idea came from Eli. He's always trying to use sticks or belts as a "fishing cool" and Turner needs to keep practicing letters. It's better If they can play a game together so I can work with Turner without "working." (He does his work boxes but I try to limit the sit-down time to 30 minutes so neither of us end up frustrated.)

I made this ABC fishing game using Dollar Store foam pieces, googley eyes, magnets, dowels and hot glue. Oddly enough, I had everything on hand. That never happens; I'm usually missing something!
